Earlier this year I got the chance to work on a project for Blackwing – the release of their Lord of the Rings gift set.

And let me tell you, this set is absolutely gorgeous in person.
Everything about the collection is not only lux but also created with a lot of thought and attention to detail.
The artwork on the Great Rings pencils is by Mike Hawthorne
and they’re so exquisite.
It actually hurt my heart a little when I had to sharpen some for the photos.

And all the touches of gold? LOVE!
Not gonna say I didn’t whisper “my precccccious” anytime I picked up the gold pencil, but like, how could you not?!
And so what if I haven’t been able to put it back in the box yet.
I don’t have a problem.

*ahem*
Anyway, here are some of my favorite shots from the project (a few are outtakes!).
And if you go to their site to grab your own set, the collection did sell out.
BUT, don’t cry! Because.
You can add your info to a wait list and then one day soon, you too could form an unhealthy relationship w a really pretty gold pencil.

“And some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend. Legend became myth. And for two and a half thousand years, the ring passed out of all knowledge.” ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Edited to add: these were all shot in camera! I brought the photos into photoshop to dodge and burn, mostly. Removed some dust and fishing line.
I did composite the smoke around the gold pencil and sharpener, but I did that with layers. Not Ai.
