In March, I watched a video about a picnic, but this picnic had a twist.
The twist?
It was all cakes!

I don’t know if you know, but I am an extreme lover of cake.
Cake is happiness.
They’re pretty, they’re fun, they chase away bad dreams, they’re made of sugar & magic, and, they’re tasty AF.

After watching and sharing that video, I wanted desperately to go to a Cake Picnic.
The only hiccup was, there weren’t any planned in my area.
So what”s a gal to do?
Share your cake dreams with your friends and then watch the magic happen!

I told my friend Jessi (chef extraordinaire and owner of Pavis Creations) and Jessi told Katie of her Elevated and on June 1st we had our very first (annual??) Cake-nic!
(Katie came up with the name and it’s friggin’ brilliant!).
Everyone attending was asked to bring a cake, preferably one you made or purchased from a local baker.

A few years back I bought a vintage Wlton’s Care Bear cake mold from a thrift store and have always wanted to try it. The box said it’d be so easy, even if you’d never decorated a cake before! Perfect!
Haha – the box lied a wee bit.
But through all the many trips to the store, the volcanic explosion of cake batter in the oven, frustrated tears. melted frosting, scrapping and re-frosting multiple times. in the end, my Care Bear cake looked pretty great! (I’ll be sharing a bts video of the whole shebang soon).

And I’m glad I pushed through and didn’t throw the cake out the window (like I wanted to a few dozen times).
I also have to learn that just because I want to do something doesn’t mean it always has to turn out perfectly. That it’s okay to choose to do something, no matter how easy or complicated, and that the result shouldn’t be the driver of my happiness. The choice to take a chance on me should.
So, in a sense, Cake-nic! offered me a little personal learning moment, which I am very grateful.

Cake-nic was such a relaxing, fun, and tasty success!!

I always love hanging out with the ladies of her Elevated: because elevated gals are the best!

Oh, and let me tell you, there are some serious bakers in this group! So many pretty and really yummy cakes!

Omg and did you see Tootie Treats cake?

Katie supported this amazing local Sacramento baker and ugh! I want that cake for every birthday and holiday and maybe every Monday, too.
It was joyful, and bright and so delicious!

And if ever you see something and you’re like,
“Oh wow, I’d love to do *fill in the blank* but there’s nothing like that where I’m at.”
Don’t be afraid to make it happen.
Lean into the good people around you and you never know, you too could start that new fun thing with and for your community – and maybe that thing is hosting your very own Cake-nic!
Because: cake!

Enjoy!
